Shontelle Layne’s uniquely spectacular story begins in the Caribbean on the beautiful Island of Barbados. Shontelle was born 4 October 1985 in Saint James, Barbados. After signing with music mogul, Steve Rifkind’s SRC Records this 23 year-old singer, songwriter and aspiring lawyer known professionally as Shontelle is a rising star set to take the world by storm.
Shontelle’s true calling as a prolific songwriter and talented singer would draw her onto centre stage, her talent predestined her to be a star. Her aunt Kim Derrick, a popular and celebrated artist in Barbados, saw her drive early on and encouraged her to pursue her dreams. While in high school, Shontelle attended Cadet Camp – where she met Rhianna. Little did either of the teens know that they would remain friends and both follow the same dream of becoming international stars in the music business.
Having begun persual of a degree in entertainment law, she spends her time studying law, opening her mind to different subjects and ultimately feeding her creative process. Barbados-based music manager Sonia Mullins took the young writer-performer under her wing, and Shontelle began to carve a reputation in the Caribbean music world by crafting songs for a number of top artists, all while attending university.
In 2005, the up and coming talent scores a hit heard far beyond the Caribbean as the writer of the girl-power anthem “Roll”. Producers Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken of SRP Records, who had discovered Rihanna in Barbados and brought her to the world stage, heard the song on a Bajan radio station and felt that it had international hit potential. They sought out the writer of the song to license it for a cover version, they signed her immediately.
Albums – Shontelligence (2008–2009)
Shontelle began work on her debut studio album Shontelligence in early 2008. "T-Shirt", her debut single, was released in July 2008 and reached number thirty-six on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming a moderate hit. However, it reached the top ten in the United Kingdom, peaking at number six there.
The second single from the album was "Stuck with Each Other", featuring Akon. It was released in the US and the UK, and reached number twenty-three in the United Kingdom. Shontelle toured as a supporting act for the UK leg of the New Kids on the Block World Tour in January 2009.
Shontelle's second album, No Gravity, was released in the US in 2010. She collaborated with Bruno Mars, Tony Kanal and Darkchild among others. The album debuted in May 2010, and reached the Billboard Hot 100. It has since become her most successful single to date, reaching number thirteen on the Billboard Hot 100. The second single from the album, "Perfect Nightmare", was released in August 2010
At the Canal Room in New York City in July 2011, Shontelle revealed news about an upcoming single and third studio album. It was also revealed that she had departed from Universal Motown and had joined Republic. The lead single from the upcoming album is called "Reflection" and was premiered on SoundCloud in September 2011.
