Romain Virgo, Jamaica’s budding singing sensation

Romain Virgo is a young singer from Jamaica, specializing in the lovers rock style of Reggae music. He was born in 1990 in rural Jamaica and grew up singing in church. Today, he is established as one of the best up and coming Jamaica has to offer.

In 2007, Virgo made history as he became the youngest contestant ever to win Digicel Rising Stars, Jamaica’s premiere talent competition, at the age of 17. Having been simply an exceptional contestant during the 2007 competition, the youngster gracefully outshone his opponents to win the competition convincingly.  His vocals are gospel-flavoured, consistently pitched and never cheaply emotive. He won only two months before his graduation from high school in St. Ann, Jamaica. Top prize at the competition, included a JA$1,000,000 prize and a recording contract with Greensleeves Records.

Hits

Only a few weeks following the competition, Romian met Donovan Germain who produced his first hit record "Mi Caan Sleep" on the Penthouse label. In fact, several hit singles followed, including "Wanna Go Home", "Live Mi Life", and the "Alton's Medley". In June 2010, VP Records released his debut album, self-titled ‘Romain Virgo’.

Appearances

Undoubtedly, after having established himself as one of the great singers of his time, especially at such a tender age, Virgo has performed at dances and stage-shows, including Rebel Salute. Furthermore, in the autumn of 2010, he joined fellow artists Capleton and Munga on a tour of the United States. Moreover, Romain has taken solo tours of Europe and other places around the globe.

Education

Quite fittingly, this young man has not neglected his academic pursuits. In addition to his music career, Virgo is pursuing his bachelor's degree at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston, majoring in voice and minoring in keyboard. This education assures that Romain’s performance will be excitingly different from others.

Where Is He Now

Today, Romain has solidified a reputation for himself as a major new reggae talent. Five years after winning the competition, Virgo’s career is definitely on the rise. His hit single ‘Can’t Sleep’ has climbed up the Jamaican charts and already gained him attention outside Jamaica as well. Other singles such as ‘Wanna Go Home’ and ‘Love Doctor’ have gotten good airplay.

With singing skills that seem to stretch beyond the talent of such a young person, Romain is taking it one step at a time and is letting people know what he has to offer. At present, Romain is working with Donovan Germain of Penthouse Music and Dawin Brown of Vikings Sounds.

The singer has also been leaving quite a musical footprint on several local and international reggae charts. His single, ‘Taking You Home’ made it to number 19 on the New York Reggae Charts and number 7 on Richie B's Top 25 Reggae Singles Chart while one of his latest singles, I Am Rich In Love is number 3 on the Global Reggae Top 40 Chart.   Navito.
