Lanham, Maryland, August 31, 2012 â€“ The Read Across Jamaica Foundation, Inc. presents a community celebration,Â United for Independence. This event celebrates the 50th anniversary of independence for Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago. The event also signals the official launch of Read Across the Caribbean. The event will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at Bladensburg Waterfront Park 4601 Annapolis Road in Bladensburg, Maryland. The celebrations start at 11:00 am and will include soccer matches, food vendors, live musical performances, and craft vendors.
The special feature of the day will be Caribbean Cooks and Books. This segment will focus on tasting of food prepared by authors of Caribbean cook book. The authors include Dorel Callender, A Caribbean Mom’s Table -Traditional Recipes for the 21st Century & Beyond; Andrea Walters,Â A Little Taste of Jamaica; Ramin Ganeshram, Sweet Hands: Island Cooking from Trinidad & Tobago; and Marie-Louise Jean, and Barbara Christophe, co-authors, TheÂ Art and Soul of Haitian Cooking.
Janice Wisdom, Executive Director, of Read Across Jamaica Foundation stated,â€ We anticipate over 800 participants as we host prominent community organizations and businesses which will provide information on literacy and its ties to voter registration, genealogical family research, immigration services, environmental concerns, health and nutrition.Â She also continued,Â â€œIn addition, there will be entertainment that will include games, music, food and a raffle for both adults and children.â€
