For various reasons, many consider Haiti to be synonymous with disaster and poverty. For the people of Haiti however, despite their many troubles, this reality couldn’t be further from the truth as they strive to showcase the beauty and diversity of the island. This is why showcases such as ‘Destination Haiti’ are important. Destination Haiti will be an all-day event that will be showcasing Haiti’s culture, cuisine, music, and art. The event will be giving people who would normally never make it to Haiti the opportunity to visit and learn more about the country.
H.O.P.E. Crossing Borders (HCB) and 10,000 Toys For Haiti
On this day, supporters and people who want to make a difference can make donations of used clothing, school items, new toys and funds while learning and enjoying the culture of this beautiful country. This effort will be led by H.O.P.E. Crossing Borders, an initiative founded by Allison Harvey. H.O.P.E. Crossing Borders is a global organization, having its humble beginnings in Haiti.
The aim is to build a transitional home in Haiti for young adults leaving orphanages. At present, young adults leave orphanages with no belongings and are forced to fend for themselves with very little knowledge on how to do so. H.O.P.E. Crossing Borders is working to change this. 10,000 Toys For Haiti (TTT4H) is the Haitian arm of HCB, an initiative whose purpose is to raise awareness, funds and support where needed. 10,000 Toys For Haiti made its first trip to Haiti in 2010. At the present, TTT4H serves 6 orphanages with approximately 1200 children at Christmas.
The Networking Diva Group
Harvey heads The Networking Diva Group, a business that assists other businesses to become more visible and create credibility in the community. The Networking Diva Group utilizes promotional events and other marketing channels to fulfill its goals. Harvey and her team believe that networking is not only good for businesses but for personal lives as well.
Destination Haiti will be held on Sunday 25th of August 2013 at 30 Gordon Mackay Rd (Jane/Wilson), running from 12noon – 8pm. The event will feature a Haitian pavilion that will consist of Haitian cuisine, an art exhibit (all pieces will be on sale), Haitian vendors, and a plethora of small business owners living in Toronto and Montreal.
There will be a fashion show to highlight designers and models of Haitian descent. Performers from as far as Montreal as well as local entertainment will also be present. Hosted by Anedie Azael, Miss Haiti 2011 with a special appearance by the Consul General of Haiti Dr. Eric Pierre, Destination Haiti will be a day of ‘Donation – Support & Discovery’. The second pavilion will be a general pavilion featuring vendors, entertainment and various activities.
Visitors will not only include Haitians but families wanting to learn more about a country that they have only seen in times of devastation. The event will be free for children under 14, allowing mothers to bring their children and introduce them to this country that is so much in need of our help.
HCB hopes to generate continued interest in Haiti by partnering with various groups, organizations and businesses so that we do not forget and have the opportunity to learn more about this country and to be able to do our part through donations, participation, knowledge and sharing.
Give— Make a Difference
On the day, HCB encourages visitors to clean out their closets, go shopping for new toys, invite their friends, bring out their families and come out and discover Haiti in a way that they have never before. A day packed with activities, great food, prizes and giveaways and a bouncy castle for the children—there will be something for everyone. A donation tent will also be set up and will be run by high school volunteers from the community where donations will be collected and sorted.
H.O.P.E. Crossing Borders is currently seeking, VENDORS, SPONSORS, SOCIAL MEDIA ORGANIZATIONS, PRIZES & VOLUNTEERS. Destination Haiti is not simply a one-time event, but will become an annual occurrence in the community that will continue to shine a bright light on the Jewel of the Caribbean, Haiti.
