The mastery of Lionel Messi which was displayed last night (June 22) again proved why he has been the best soccer player in the world for many years.
Messi and his Argentinian teammates displayed a brand of soccer that showed the beauty of the game. Brisk passes, deftly made dribbles, twist, turns and shot towards the USA’s goal—Very entertaining!
With less than 3 minutes into the match Messi got the ball with a lot of space, he chipped it forward to Lavezzi, but it was cleared past the goal line for a corner. A short corner was taken, a slight pass was deflected, but it fell to Lavezzi who headed it beautifully into the back of the net— a brilliant start for Argentina!
Lionel Messi and top-ranked Argentina continued to overpower the USA team and in the 32nd minute Messi’s picture perfect free kick put the outcome beyond doubt well before halftime.
Messi’s record setting goal came from a free kick that would make the greats—Zico, Eder, and Maradona shake their heads in awe.
With his 55th goal for Argentina Messi eclipses Gabriel Batistuta as Argentina’s all-time leading goals scorer.
Gonzalo Higuain added two more goals after the break to end the game 4-0. Argentina will be well rested for Sunday’s final in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where they will meet the winner of Wednesday’s semifinal in Chicago between Chile and Colombia.
