JDCF Hosts HEALTHTRAVAGANZA FOR JAMAICA
The Jamaican Diaspora Canada Foundation (JDCF) will host its second annual fundraising event for the purpose of raising money to enhance its efforts in making donations of medical equipment and expertise to Jamaica. The fundraising event takes place on Friday, January 17, 2014 at the JCA, 995 Arrow Road, Toronto, Canada at 7: 00 PM.
Proceeds from last year’s fundraiser were adequate to purchase 41 Blood Pressure Machines and 25 Kiddy Cuffs for some hospitals and clinics in Jamaica.
In its endeavor to continue helping needy citizens in Jamaica, Kingsley Gilliam, Director of Social Services and Health for the JDCF says, “This year we hope to be able to purchase several more and we are committed to keeping the promise of obtaining approximately 350 of the 1,000 machines committed by JDCF, and urge the organizations in the US and UK diasporas do likewise..”
In addition to the Blood Pressure Machine Drive, JDCF shipped a 40 ft. container in November 2013 with assorted medical equipment including hospital beds, dental chairs, wheel chairs, IV poles, physiotherapy equipment, crutches, canes, and other specialized equipment to the Ministry of Health for distribution to public hospitals.
The shipment went to the Jamaica Ministry of Health for distribution to the North Eastern region’s hospitals in Port Antonio, Annatto Bay, Port Maria and St. Ann’s Bay. The donation of equipment was made possible through the contribution of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (Sunnybrook).
Gilliam said that Sunnybrook has partnered with the JDCF to host the 2014 Jamaican and Diaspora Health Forum. The forum will review the progress of the implementation of the Vision 20/30 plan for health in Jamaica and make a tangible contribution to realizing that vision. He lauds the efforts of Sunnybrook and says, “Sunnybrook is therefore a very reliable partner with the JDCF and the Government of Jamaica.”
The donation of needed medical equipment is only one aspect of a three dimensional Partnership between the JDCF, The Government of Jamaica, and Sunnybrook
