THE BAHAMAS has topped a World Bank “wealth” rating of Caribbean countries, while Jamaica was ranked below small Islands such as Dominica. The World Bank, a Washington-based financial institution, rated all the countries in the Caribbean Community (Caricom).
The Bahamas, which has a tourism industry that accounts for more than 60 per cent of its GDP and provides jobs for more than half the country’s workforce, emerged as the most economically prosperous. Jamaica, which was forced to approach the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for economic assistance, is listed below Dominica and St Vincent and the Grenadines and above Guyana.
