I know you’ve heard it a thousand times before. But it’s true. Many people worldwide are in responsible positions which involve great leadership. A bunch of articles have been written about Great leaders. However, gaps still remain. As said by Warren G. Bennis in 15th Annual Leadership Summit Grand Valley State University: “The most dangerous leadership myth is that leaders are born — that there is a genetic factor to leadership. That’s nonsense; in fact, the opposite is true. Leaders are made rather than born". Below are the 6 key qualities shared by Great Leaders.
1. Vision is the most primary quality of Great Leaders
Great Leaders give clear directions on every occasion. They rally men and women to a common purpose. They take people or organizations where they do not momentously want to go, but should go. They lift followers’ vision to high sights. They are especially interested in raising followers’ performance to a higher standard. Great Leaders are always creating plans by which to guide their followers efficiently.
2. Great leaders are courageous and self-confident
Great Leaders are risk takers. They have the confidence to stand alone and the courage to make tough decisions. They delegate easily because of their self-control and the capacity of controlling others. Great Leaders are not afraid of competition from followers. The leader who lives in terror that one of his followers may take his position is almost sure to realize that fear sooner or later.
3. A keen sense of justice is the most admired quality of Great Leaders
Great leaders are guided by a sense of loyalty, justice and fairness. In order to maintain their leadership, Great Leaders should be loyal to their trust, and to their associates, those above them, and those below them. The justice is the guarantee of all the other qualities.
4. Great Leaders assume full responsibility
Great Leaders are willing to assume responsibility for the mistakes and the shortcomings of their followers. They do not make excuses for things go wrong. They always focus on the future, and they strive to anticipate crisis on regular basis and consequences in the environment.
5. Great Leaders have the compassion to listen to the needs of others
Great Leaders are willing to confront clearly the major anxiety of their people. They are in sympathy with their followers. Moreover, they must understand them and take the front line to solve their problems. The day followers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help or decided you do not care.
6. Cooperation is the vital quality of Great leaders
Great leaders must understand, and apply the principle of cooperative effort and be able to induce their followers to do the same. They lead by inspiring and not by trying to manipulate or instill fear in the hearts of his followers. Leadership-by-consent of the followers is the only brand which can endure. Folks may follow the forced leadership temporarily, but they will not do so willingly. This leadership style will soon or later fail. Great Leaders require no title and their doors to their office are open to all who wish to enter, and his working quarters are free from formality or demonstration.
Any person, who possesses these qualities of leadership, will find abundant opportunity to lead in any circumstance of life. Becoming a Great Leader is the continuous process of personal and professional development. You become a Great Leader, day by day. Leaders are not born, they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work.
